England are closing in on appointing a new Test head coach following Brendon McCullum’s resignation from the post. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been evaluating multiple candidates as it looks to build on the team’s recent progress in the longest format.
The opening has attracted great attention in the world of cricket, with many famous coaches and ex-international cricketers associated with the job opening.

Among the names doing the rounds were former India head coaches Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid, both of whom have enjoyed successful coaching stints at the highest level. However, fresh reports suggest that England are set to move in a different direction.
Justin Langer to become England’s new Test coach
According to journalist Tanuj Lakhina, former Australia head coach Justin Langer has emerged as the frontrunner to become England’s next Test coach.
The report further states that while there had been speculation surrounding former India head coaches Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid, neither of them is currently in the race for the position.
If Langer’s appointment is finalised, it could also have implications for the Indian Premier League (IPL). There are strong indications that the Australian could part ways with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he currently serves as the franchise’s head coach, in order to take up the England role.
Langer boasts extensive coaching experience at both international and franchise levels. He led Australia to their maiden ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021, and later on, he left the national coaching duties at the beginning of 2022 when his contract expired. The former Australian opener was later named head coach of Lucknow Super Giants before the 2024 season of the IPL.
Neither the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) nor Lucknow Super Giants has made an official announcement regarding Langer’s future. As things stand, the development remains based on the latest report, with further clarity expected once the ECB finalises its coaching appointment.
