Ajit Agarkar tenure as India chief selector ended on October 4, 2026.

Ajit Agarkar served as the chief selector of India’s Men’s Cricket Team for a period of more than three years. He joined the position on July 4, 2023, and his extended tenure ended on October 4, 2026.

India achieved three ICC titles (T20 World Cup titles in 2024 and 2026 and the 2025 Champions Trophy) during his tenure. Though there were several controversies during his tenure involving senior players like Rohit Sharma.

Despite all controversies, his tenure was proved to be fruitful for India. Now, he has been relieved from his job, and Pragyan Ojha is working as interim chief selector. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opened applications for the vacant role.

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has shown interest for the available post in the selection committee. Jaffer was a prolific scorer during his time at the domestic level. He has also represented India in 31 tests and two ODIs.

Jaffer has confirmed that he has applied for the role. In a recent interaction with PTI, Jaffer said, “Yes, I have applied for the job.” The former opener played 31 tests between 2000 and 2008, scoring 1944 runs at 34.10 with 5 centuries and 11 half-centuries.

He scored two test double centuries, which came against West Indies and Pakistan. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), featuring Jatin Paranjape and Ashok Malhotra will elect the candidate for the vacant post.

Jaffer has the most number of the Test matches among other candidates for the vacant post. Pragyan Ojha is currently the front runner for the position, who has the backing from the BCCI.

Though Ohja has played 24 tests, which is fewer than Jaffer’s number. However, some reports confirm that Ojha has strong support, and he is likely to be the Agarkar’s successor for the role.

Meanwhile, former off-spinner Ramesh Powar is also in contention from the West Zone. The final decision will depend on CAC’s judgement of all the candidates.
