Rohit Sharma has scored 64 runs in the first two matches against Afghanistan.

The India vs Afghanistan ODI series is underway; it began in Dharamshala on June 13. India have sealed the series, winning the first two games convincingly by 7 wickets and 170 runs, respectively.

The Men in Blue are playing the third and final ODI of the series against Afghanistan in Chennai today, and will aim for a clean sweep by winning this match.

The Indian skipper Shubman Gill has been in sublime form in the series, already scoring 238 runs in the first two matches, bagging him two Player of the Match awards. Whereas the debutants, Gurnoor Brar (7), Harsh Dubey (4) and Prince Yadav (3), have risen to the occasion, picking crucial wickets.

Ahead of this series, there was buzz about the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the ODI format. Although Virat Kohli was ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury, fans enjoyed Rohit Sharma’s batting.

Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma has scored 16 and 48 runs in the first two matches of this series. He got run out in the first match due to miscommunication with Shubman Gill in the middle. However, in the second clash, when he was timing the ball incredibly well, he got cleaned up by Rashid Khan.

Rohit has not scored a half-century since the series against South Africa. He also missed a few matches in IPL 2026 due to a hamstring injury. However, he was declared fit ahead of this ODI series.

Now, ahead of the 3rd ODI, many fans took to X (Twitter) to claim that this is Rohit’s last international match. They talked about Rohit not being in the BCCI’s plans for the ODI World Cup 2027 and will, therefore, retire from international cricket after this match.

However, there has been no confirmation from the BCCI on this so far, which makes it clear that these are just rumours. A renowned Times of India journalist, Gaurav Gupta, has affirmed that Rohit is still in contention for the opening spot in the World Cup, dismissing the rumours.

Nevertheless, the continuous assessment of his performance cannot be denied. Furthermore, the experiment with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the opening slot and Ishan Kishan’s return to the ODI team indicate that a backup opener is being groomed for the 2027 World Cup.

The team management has repeatedly affirmed the importance of having experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the team. Their presence not only rubs off on the players, but also benefits the recently appointed young captain.

Shubman can learn a lot from one of India’s finest white-ball captains and apply those lessons to his own captaincy. India are scheduled to tour the UK for a white-ball series, comprising 2 T20Is against Ireland, 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs against England. The ODI squad for the England series is yet to be announced.
