Afghanistan become the second team from Group 1 to qualify for semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

It was a memorable day for Afghanistan and their cricket fans as they achieved something special that not many predicted at the start of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. In the last Super 8 game of the tournament, Afghanistan clinched a close win against Bangladesh and defended one of the lowest totals ever to secure a semi-final berth in the ongoing ICC tournament.

With this, they became the fourth team to enter the knockout stage after England, South Africa, and India. They beat Bangladesh by 8 runs (DLS method) in a rain-hit game at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St. Vincent. At one stage, it looked like Bangladesh would register an easy win when they were 80/5 in 10.4 overs, needing another 36 runs to win in 56 balls to spare with five wickets in hand. But then, Rashid Khan picked two wickets off consecutive balls to turn the game around.

Afghanistan have shown some great cricket in the last year or so, and they have been one of the fastest growing teams around. And finally, they have achieved something special that was missing for them. They made it to the semi-finals of an ICC event for the first time. It was an emotional moment for the team, the players, and even the fans who were present at the ground. But as Afghanistan registered the win, the celebration started back at their home, and fans came out on the streets to celebrate their team’s historic win.

Speaking of the game, Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bat first. They had a 59-run opening stand, but the run rate was under 6. Rahmanullah Gurbaz played yet another important innings of 43 off 55 balls, and in the end, Rashid Khan smashed three sixes to score 19* off 10, and Afghanistan finished with 115/5. For Bangladesh, opener Litton Das scored an important fifty.

He was the lone warrior of the team and remained unbeaten at 54 runs off 49 balls. But, no one else supported him, and Bangladesh were bowled out for 105 runs in 17.5 overs. Rashid picked up 4/23, and Naveen-ul-Haq took 4/26. Now, Afghanistan will take on South Africa on Wednesday in semi-final 1 at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad.
