"Hardik got robbed.." Fans outrage as Hardik Pandya gets removed from India's leadership group in ODIs and T20Is
Hardik Pandya lost India’s team vice-captaincy in both T20Is and ODIs.
Hardik Pandya, the Indian all-rounder, had very bad news on all fronts of life, both professional and personal on July 18, 2024. The BCCI announced the Indian team squads for the limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka, where they will clash in three ODIs and three T20Is starting July 27.
The T20I matches will be played on July 27, 28, and 30 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The ODI series will follow next and will be played at the RPS Stadium in Colombo on August 2, 4 and 7.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returned to the Indian ODI team, while Rohit Sharma was named captain of the side. In a surprise, Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain of the team at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, lost his vice-captaincy to Shubman Gill, as he had opted out of the ODIs for personal reasons.
On the other hand, Hardik Pandya was also the vice-captain of the Indian T20I team in the recent ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where he helped India become champions for the second time. Hardik Pandya had previously captained India in T20Is as well and was primed to be the next captain in the shortest format of international cricket.
Hardik Pandya robbed of captaincy in T20Is as Suryakumar Yadav named captain
Hardik Pandya had captained India in New Zealand both at home and away and in the West Indies also last year. He was the leader last year as Rohit Sharma focused on ODIs due to the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Once Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20Is after the T20 World Cup win, everyone thought Hardik Pandya would become captain.
However, new head coach Gautam Gambhir threw a spanner in the plans as he wanted a captain who could play consistently for India, and with Hardik Pandya’s injury issues, that was not possible. Hence the BCCI selection panel and Gambhir were informed of the same to Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav was named captain of the T20U side.
The cricketing fans on social media platform X were left with mixed feelings as Hardik Pandya was removed from the leadership groups just a few weeks after India won the T20 World Cup, where he was the vice-captain.
They shared their thoughts and were outraged as BCCI for the same on social media platform X.
