Virat Kohli top-scored for India with 76 runs in the final, but his strike rate of 128 came under some criticism.

Star India batsman Virat Kohli stepped up with the bat in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa on Saturday by scoring 76 runs off 59 balls.

He batted for 18.5 overs and held on end safely as he kept losing batting partners at the other end. While Kohli brought out his best of the tournament in the biggest game of all and helped India post 176, his strike rate of 128 has come under a bit of scrutiny, more of which may pile on if India loses the final.

Kohli had scored only 75 runs in 75 balls in the entire tournament before the final. But in the final, on a slightly challenging surface at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, he scored 76 runs off 59 balls.

He started off India’s innings with three fours in the first over to Marco Jansen and looked the best he’s done all tournament. But India lost Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav in the powerplay and that pushed Kohli to take a bit more conservative route in order to take India over 150 runs.

Kohli and Axar Patel revived India with their partnership of 72 (54) before Axar got run out. The opener formed another crucial stand, off 57 (33 with Shivam Dube.

Kohli reached his half-century in 48 balls and then opened up his arms to smash Rabada for a four and a six before tonking Jansen for the same result. He was dismissed by Jansen, caught at long-on while attempting another maximum.

Following his knock, some fans praised for him for performing big in the final after a string of poor performances throughout the tournament, while some criticised for not accelerating much during his stay at the crease.

Here are some reactions of fans to Virat Kohli’s 76 (59) in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa:
