Jos Buttler has hit the three fastest centuries by an England batsman in ODI cricket.

England have produced many iconic batsmen in the history of the game. The transition in their white-ball cricket happened after the 2015 ODI World Cup. From an ordinary and dull ODI team, they became world-beaters, eventually clinching the ICC ODI World Cup and ICC T20 World Cup trophies in 2019 and 2022 respectively.

Former captain Eoin Morgan liberated his batsmen and gave them the freedom to bat with a fearless approach. This blog is also related to such a topic, which includes discussing the best English power-hitters in ODI cricket.

Here we will talk about the fastest ODI centuries by England batsmen.

Overall, the record for the fastest ODI century belongs to AB de Villiers, who smashed a 31-ball ton in 2015. But English batters aren’t far behind. So, let’s check about the top five on this list.

List of the top five fastest centuries (100) scored by England batsmen in ODI cricket:

5. Jonny Bairstow – 54 Balls vs Scotland, 2018

Star batter Jonny Bairstow has hit the fifth-fastest century for England in ODI cricket. He did it in a game against Scotland in 2018 at Edinburgh. It was a high-scoring game as Scotland posted a massive total of 371/5 in the first innings, courtesy of Calum MacLeod’s 94-ball 140.

In reply, Bairstow started the innings brilliantly with a 54-ball century. He made 105 runs off 59 balls, with 12 fours and six sixes. But as soon as he got out, England lost the momentum and got all out for 365, losing the game by six runs.

4. Moeen Ali – 53 Balls vs West Indies, 2017

Former all-rounder Moeen Ali has hit the fourth-fastest ton for England in ODI cricket. It came in a game against West Indies in September 2017 in Bristol. At one stage, England were struggling at 217/6 in 35 overs but then came a 53-ball century by Moeen.

The southpaw smashed 102 runs off 57 balls, with seven fours and eight sixes. He helped England reach 369/9. England bowled West Indies out for 245 and won by 124 runs. Moeen won the Player of the Match award.

3. Jos Buttler – 50 Balls vs Pakistan, 2019

Jos Buttler is among the best white-ball batters in the world. His greatness in limited-overs cricket is further reflected by the fact that he is the only English batter to have hit three ODI centuries off 50 or fewer balls. He slammed a 50-ball century against Pakistan in Southampton in May 2019.

Batting first, England posted a mammoth total of 373/3, with Buttler scoring 110 off 55 balls, with six fours and nine sixes. He added an unbeaten 162 runs off 89 balls with Eoin Morgan (71* off 48). In reply, Pakistan reached 361/7 and lost by 12 runs. Fakhar Zaman scored 138 off 106.

2. Jos Buttler – 47 Balls vs Netherlands, 2022

England hold the record for the highest ODI total, which came against the Netherlands in June 2022 in Amstelveen. England finished very close to 500, managing 498/4 in 50 overs. It was possible because of a blistering ton by Buttler off 47 balls.

Phil Salt (122 off 93) and Dawid Malan (125 off 109) hit a century each earlier in the innings before Buttler’s assault. He scored an unbeaten 162 off 70 balls, with seven fours and 14 sixes. The Netherlands managed 266 all out and lost by 232 runs.

Jos Buttler’s 46-ball century against Pakistan in 2015 is the fastest century in ODI cricket by an English batter. This game was played in Dubai, where England reached a huge score of 355/5 while batting first.

Jason Roy (102 off 117) gave his side a good start and Buttler gave a spectacular finish with an unbeaten 116 off 52 balls, with 10 fours and eight sixes. Pakistan were bowled out for 271, and England won by 84 runs.
