Indian batsmen have hit some of the fastest centuries in T20I cricket.

The record for the fastest century in men’s T20I cricket belongs to Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who cracked a 27-ball ton against Cyprus in June 2024.

It is indeed not a surprise anymore that a batsman had slammed a century in less than 30 balls. The modernisation of the white-ball game, expedited by T20 cricket, has been such that batting records are now always under threat because of the pitches getting flatter, bats getting bigger, and batters getting stronger.

The Indian cricket team were the inaugural champions of the T20 World Cup. But, it took them a long time to adopt the modern-age batting template of aggressive cricket. Once the Indian batsmen started giving themselves more freedom, they, too, started shattering records.

In this article, we will see the Indian batsmen who have hit the five fastest T20I hundreds.

Top five fastest centuries (100) by Indian batsmen in T20I cricket

5. Abhishek Sharma – 46 balls

Youngster Abhishek Sharma notched up his maiden T20I century in only his second outing in national colours. He whacked a 46-ball century, with the help of seven fours and eight sixes, against Zimbabwe in Harare in July 2024.

Sharma’s ton propelled India to a huge total of 234, and in reply, the hosts got bowled out for 134 runs, losing by 100 runs, the exact score of Abhishek.

4. KL Rahul – 46 balls

In his fourth T20I innings, KL Rahul notched up a 46-ball ton against West Indies in 2016 in Lauderhill, USA. India were set a target of 246 as Evin Lewis had thumped a 49-ball 100.

In the chase, India got going through Rahul’s century and Rohit’s fifty. Rahul creamed 12 fours and five sixes in his knock of 110* off 51 balls. However, Rahul and MS Dhoni couldn’t finish off the game and lost it on the last ball by only one run.

3. Suryakumar Yadav – 45 balls

Out of Suryakumar Yadav’s four T20I centuries so far, only one has come in India. It was against Sri Lanka in Rajkot in 2023.

Suryakumar blasted seven fours and nine sixes in his knock of 112* off 51 balls, during which he became India’s second-fastest T20I centurion, notching up his ton in 45 balls.

India posted a big total of 228 and won by 91 runs.

2. Sanju Samson – 40 balls

On 12th October, 2024, India’s Sanju Samson smashed his maiden century in T20 internationals. He blew away Bangladesh bowlers to smash a 40-ball ton, which is the second-fastest ton by an Indian batter in T20 internationals. Overall, it is the 10th fastest century in T20I cricket.

1. Rohit Sharma – 35 balls

Former captain Rohit Sharma holds the record for the fastest T20I century by an Indian. He smashed a 35-ball century against Sri Lanka in 2017 in Indore.

Batting first, Rohit and Rahul put up a giant partnership of 165 runs in 12.4 overs. In this, Sharma walloped 12 fours and 10 sixes to end up with 118 (43). His knock helped India to register their highest T20I team total – 260. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 172 runs during the chase.

Rohit’s 35-ball century is the joint-fastest T20I ton by a batsman from a Full Member nation. South Africa’s David Miller also has a 35-ball hundred in T20Is.
