Team India hold two of the top five fastest team 100s in test cricket.

There was a time when if a team scored 200 runs in an entire day of test cricket, they would go back home pleased. But the game has modified significantly now, with the mindset of the teams and batters changing drastically.

That is why the rate of scoring in test cricket has increased considerably in the 21st century. Plenty of credit for that also has to go to the modernisation of white-ball cricket, which has imbued the batters with spates of self-confidence and freedom.

This article is also related to this context, where we will talk about the top five fastest team 100s in test cricket.

Generally, teams bat aggressively from the start of their innings when they plan of declaration and give their bowlers enough time to dismiss the opposition on the last couple of days of the test. Of course, England’s Bazballers don’t need the reason of declaration to bat quickly.

List of the top five fastest team 100s in test cricket (overs faced)

5. 13.4 overs, Bangladesh vs West Indies, Mirpur 2012

Bangladesh hold the record for the joint-fourth-fastest team hundred in test cricket. They achieved this feat against West Indies in Mirpur in 2012 by reaching the score of 100 in just 13.4 overs, with Tamim Iqbal scoring 72 off 71. However, this aggressive start went in vain eventually.

Bangladesh made 556 in reply to West Indies’ 527/4d. But, they couldn’t repeat that performance in the second innings and were bowled out for 167 while chasing 245 and lost the game by 77 runs.

4. 13.4 overs, England vs Pakistan, Karachi 2022

England, under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, have set a template to go after the bowling from the onset and not relent even when wickets fall. This has earned them immense success, including a 3-0 win in Pakistan in 2022. That’s where England registered the joint-fourth-fastest team hundred in test cricket.

In the third test in Karachi, England made 100 runs in 13.4 overs in the second innings while chasing 167. Ben Duckett (82* off 78) and Zak Crawley (41 off 41) crashed a flurry of boundaries. England made 170/2 in 28.1 overs to win the game.

3. 13.1 overs, Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, Colombo SSC 2001

Sri Lanka have also registered one of the fastest team hundreds, courtesy of Sanath Jayasuriya’s onslaught. Against Bangladesh in 2001 in Colombo, Sri Lanka reached the 100-run mark in 13.1 overs as Jayasuriya slammed a 35-ball fifty.

Sri Lanka declared at 555/5 in 103.3 overs and dismissed Bangladesh for 90 and 328 to win by an innings and 167 runs. Jayawardene slammed Sri Lanka’s fastest test ton (81 balls) in that innings.

2. 12.2 overs, India vs West Indies, Port of Spain 2023

Team India hold the record for the top two fastest team hundreds in test cricket. The second-fastest came against West Indies in Port of Spain in July 2023. It came as Rohit Sharma (57 off 44) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (38 off 30) played intentful shots from the get-go in India’s second innings to take the side to 100 in 12.2 overs.

India declared at 181/2 in 24 overs and gave West Indies a target of 365. The game ended in a draw.

1. 10.1 overs, India vs Bangladesh, Kanpur 2024

The fastest team hundred in test cricket was recorded by India against Bangladesh at Green Park, Kanpur, on September 30, 2024. Because of rain, only 35 overs of play was possible on the first three days. Hence, to push for a result, India batted ultra-aggressively in their first innings on day 4. It felt like they were batting in T20 cricket.

India raced to fifty in three overs (the fastest team fifty) and completed 100 runs in 10.1 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed a 31-ball fifty.
