MI roped in three former CSK players in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

After making several blunders in the last three auctions, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have built one of the strongest squads in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.

MI, who won their last of their five IPL titles in 2020, have struggled with injuries and match-winners in the last four seasons, making it to the playoffs only once. They suffered a bottom-placed finish in IPL 2024 and IPL 2022.

In the same period, on the other hand, their rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won two more titles, in 2021 and 2023 and missed the playoffs only on net run rate last season.

One ploy MI made to address their issues at the IPL 2025 mega auction is to rope in some of CSK’s players of the last few seasons. In the mega auction, they bought three players who have been part of Super Kings in recent years.

3 former CSK players who will represent MI in IPL 2025:

1. Deepak Chahar

Pace-bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar was with Chennai Super Kings from 2018 to 2024, helping them win three titles in this period. In his IPL career of 81 matches, Chahar has snared 77 wickets, out of which 58 have come in the powerplay.

He was bought by Mumbai for INR 9.25 crores. CSK also bid for him but eventually pulled out. Mumbai have roped in Chahar to partner him with Trent Boult in the powerplay. This would allow skipper Hardik Pandya to save Bumrah’s one extra over for the latter stages of the game.

2. Mitchell Santner

Mitchell Santner has been part of the IPL since 2018 and has spent all his career in CSK’s yellow jersey. He will now don the blue and gold of Mumbai Indians. He was bought at his base price of INR 2 crores.

Due to the presence of Jadeja, Santner wasn’t a regular playing XI member of Chennai. But he did well whenever opportunity arised: in 18 games he took 15 wickets and maintained a tidy economy of 6.91.

Mumbai struggled with their spin-attack in the last few seasons and to improve on that front, they have roped in Santner, who is known for his control on the run flow.

3. Karn Sharma

Leg-spinner Karn Sharma is one of the few players who have won an IPL title with both CSK (2018, 2021) and MI (2017). He also won the title in 2016 with SRH.

Karn was with RCB in the last two IPL seasons and was bought by MI for INR 50 lakhs at the IPL 2025 mega auction.

He has featured in 84 matches in the IPL and taken 76 wickets.
