Suryakumar Yadav managed to score only 72 runs in Asia Cup 2025.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir shared his thoughts on T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav’s poor batting form. This comes ahead of the first match of the five-match T20I series between Australia and India, which begins on October 29 in Canberra.
The Men in Blue recently won Asia Cup 2025 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, the Indian team will confront quite different circumstances and surfaces, and captain Suryakumar Yadav’s batting form will be a major focus. The right-handed hitter has struggled in T20Is in 2025, getting only 100 runs in 12 matches.
After scoring 47* against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025 group stage game, Yadav did not play much in the next games, including the final. He scored 72 runs in six games during the competition.
Gambhir stated that he is not worried about Suryakumar’s individual form ahead of India’s first T20I against Australia, highlighting the team’s dedication to an extremely aggressive style of play.
“Honestly, Surya’s batting form doesn’t concern me because we have committed to an ultra-aggressive template in our dressing room. When you embrace this philosophy, failures are inevitable. It would be easy for Surya to score 40 runs off 30 balls and avoid criticism, but we have collectively decided that it’s acceptable to fail while pursuing this approach,” Gambhir told JioStar.
Many advocated for his dismissal, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did nothing and kept him as captain for the ensuing Australia trip.
Surya is a great human being: Gautam Gambhir
He also emphasized the depth of India’s batting lineup, citing Abhishek Sharma’s outstanding performance over the last year.
“Currently, Abhishek is in good form and has maintained it throughout the Asia Cup. When Surya finds his rhythm, he will shoulder the responsibility accordingly. In T20 cricket, our focus isn’t on individual runs but on the brand of cricket we want to play. With our aggressive style, batters may fail more often, but impact ultimately matters more than mere runs,” Gambhir added.
Gambhir went on to say that Suryakumar Yadav is a wonderful person, which has helped him become a good leader and foster a positive team environment.
“Surya is a great human being, and good humans make good leaders. While he speaks highly of me, my role is simply to advise him fairly based on my reading of the game. Ultimately, this is his team. His free-spirited character perfectly matches T20 cricket’s essence; it’s about freedom and expression. Your off-field personality reflects on the field and in the dressing room, and Surya has maintained this atmosphere brilliantly over the past 1.5 years,” Gambhir said.
The rest of the T20Is will be played in Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast, and Brisbane on October 31 and November 2, 6, and 8.
