Sourav Ganguly also spoke about Rohit Sharma’s form in test cricket and its importance before the England tour.

The former Indian Cricket Team captain Sourav Ganguly believes that the present ODI and test captain Rohit Sharma should be in charge of improving Indian test team since the squad is currently struggling in the format.

After consecutive series of defeats to New Zealand and Australia, the Rohit Sharma-led team was unable to advance to the ICC World Test Championship final (WTC) 2023-25 final.

India were well poised to qualify for their third straight ICC WTC final after defeating Bangladesh 2-0 at home. But then disaster struck, and they lost six of the last seven tests they played against New Zealand and Australia and finished at the third spot in ICC WTC standings.

In November 2024, India suffered their first-ever home defeat in a three-match Test series when they were thrashed 0–3 by New Zealand. In addition, the Asian Giants were unable to accomplish a hat trick of series wins in Australia after losing 1-3 there.

India are not good at red-ball cricket: Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly shared his views on India’s performance in test cricket in the recent past and stated that Rohit Sharma should take responsibility for the same.

“I’m not surprised that he’s taken the side to greater heights in white ball. I don’t know whether he’s going to continue playing Test cricket, but if he is hearing me, he should take the responsibility of turning things around in red-ball. India is not good at red-ball at the moment, and they need to look at it and find a way to play well in England because that’s going to be a very important five-Test series. Rohit has to find a way to get this team going,” Ganguly told RevSportz.

Ganguly added that Rohit’s performance as a test batter is much below his potential. He added that India’s five-match test series in England later this year will require him to be at the top of his game.

“What has surprised me is his form in red ball over the last 4-5 years. A player of his stature and ability can do much better than what he has done. He must put on his thinking cap because we have 5 Tests against England, and that’s going to be another hard series. Just like the way it was in Australia. It’s going to seem; it’s going to swing. India needs him to perform in the red ball, but in the white ball, he is one of the greatest ever,” Ganguly stated.

India will travel to England and will play a five-match test series in June-July that will kickstart their ICC WTC 2025-27 campaign.
