Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has named his two favourites to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has picked his two favourites, who can lift the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024. The marquee tournament will be played in the Caribbean Islands and the USA in the month of June.

Surprisingly, the former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Ganguly excluded the co-hosts of the tournament, West Indies, from his list of favourites.

It is to be noted that the Caribbean nation has previously won the T20 World Cup trophy two times. The Rovam Powell-led West Indies will once again enter the tournament as favorites to lift the championship for the third time.

Sourav Ganguly picks India and Australia as favorites to lift the T20 World Cup 2024

The 51-year-old Ganguly believes that Rohit Sharma-led India and Mitchell Marsh-led Australia will dominate the upcoming ICC tournament. It is to be noted that both countries faced each other in the ODI World Cup 2023 final, where hosts India suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

“India and Australia the two best teams of the tournament. I’m sure they will do the same thing in the USA and the West Indies,” Ganguly said as quoted by MyKhel.

The T20 World Cup 2024 will have four groups consisting of five teams each, with top two sides from their respective groups progressing to the Super Eight of the tournament.

Then the top four sides of the Super Eight will play the semi-final, and then the winners of the semis will face each other in the finals. Australia are slotted in Group B with the defending champions England, Namibia, Scotland, and Oman. Meanwhile, India find themselves in Group A along with arch-rival Pakistan, co-hosts USA, Ireland, and Canada.

It’s a fabulous squad: Sourav Ganguly on India’s 15-member line-up

After performing brilliantly in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Yuzvendra Chahal were added to the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The former Indian captain Ganguly remained optimistic about the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC tournament.

The former BCCI president added that it is a fantastic line-up and he is pretty much sure about the management picking the best players for the T20 World Cup 2024.

“It’s a fabulous squad, they are all match winners. All 15 are good enough to be selected, I’m sure Rohit (Sharma) and Rahul (Dravid) will pick the best,” Ganguly said.

Sourav Ganguly explains why Rinku Singh couldn’t make it into the Indian side

Lower-middle-order batter Rinku Singh couldn’t make it into the final 15 even after performing well for past one year for India and in the IPL for his franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. Rinku will travel with the squad as a reserve player. BCCI Chief selector Ajiit Agarkar opened up that it was a very tough call to exclude Rinku from the 15-man squad.

Meanwhile, former BCCI president Ganguly explained that the selectors wanted to go with additional spinners as the wickets in the Caribbean Islands and USA may assist spinners and that’s why Rinku had to miss out.

“It’s West Indies. The wickets may be slow and assist spin so they (selectors) wanted to go with another spinner. Maybe because of that Rinku didn’t get an opportunity but it’s just the beginning for Rinku,” Ganguly said.
