Virat Kohli has just played nine innings as an opener for India in the T20Is till now.

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has opined on star batter Virat Kohli‘s batting position in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The marquee tournament will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA in the month of June.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opening batter Kohli is currently the leading run-getter of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. In just 12 outings, the star batter has smashed 634 runs at an average of 70.44 and a stunning strike-rate of 153.51. Kohli also has a hundred to his name. It is to be noted that Kohli is playing with a higher strike rate this season as compared to his IPL career strike rate of 134.31.

Virat Kohli has played just nine innings as an opener in the T20Is toll now. The right-handed batter has smashed 400 runs at a stunning average of 57.14 and an impressive strike rate of 161.29. ‘King Kohli’ has two fifties and one century to his name while opening the batting for India in the shortest format.

In the IPL, Kohli has played 110 matches as an opener. He has amassed 4245 runs at an average of 46.14 till now. The Bengaluru batter has smashed eight centuries at a strike rate of 137.86 while opening in the IPL. In the ongoing IPL 2024, Kohli has been in sensational touch as an opener for the Bengaluru franchise.

Backing Kohli’s skills as an opener, former BCCI president Ganguly has advised Indian team management to use the Indian stalwart as opener in the upcoming ICC tournament.

“Virat is playing exceptionally well. The way Kohli batted last night – 90 in quick time, you need to use him as an opener in the T20 World Cup. He should open, evidenced by his last few IPL innings which have been outstanding,” Sourav Ganguly told PTI.

A few days ago, the BCCI announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming global tournament. Rohit Sharma will lead the side, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya will serve as his deputy. Talking about the same, the former Indian skipper Ganguly said that the selection committee has picked the best possible squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Ganguly added that apart from batting depth, bowling is also looking excellent, as the management has picked the ideal combination for the upcoming ICC tournament.

“This is an excellent squad. I think they have picked the best possible squad. Apart from batting depth, bowling looks excellent. “Bumrah is the best fast bowler in the world at the moment. We have experience in Kuldeep, Axar, Siraj. It’s an ideal combination we have this time,” said Ganguly.

The Rohit Sharma-led side will play all of their group stage matches in the USA. They will commence their campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York. The much-awaited India vs Pakistan clash is scheduled for June 9. Indian will then play the co-hosts USA on June 12, followed by their last group stage fixture against Canada on June 15.
