Gautam Gambhir has now lost two test series at home as Indian head coach.
Indian Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir talked about his future as a coach. He made a bold statement, saying that he is the same guy under whom the team won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and Asia Cup 2025.
Gautam Gambhir has come under a massive scanner for his poor record as a coach in test cricket. After the 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand last year, India hit a new low in the longest format of the game this year.
India suffered a 2-0 whitewash against South Africa at home and this marked the second series loss in the last three at home, a rare thing in Indian Cricket. The Indian Cricket Team faced a 30-run loss in Kolkata and then suffered a 408-run loss in the second match in Guwahati.
The loss against South Africa made India slip to fifth spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table. Things now look tough for them and following India’s horrible show in the format, Gautam Gambhir has faced a lot of criticism.
I am the same guy under whom we won the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup as well – Gautam Gambhir on his future as India coach

Even in the press conference after the match, Gautam Gambhir was asked about his future. He however, replied that it is up to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to decide. But, he reminded everyone about his success as a coach as well. Speaking to reporters, he said:
“That’s up to the BCCI to decide. Indian cricket is important, I am not important. People keep forgetting it. I am the same guy who got results in England with a young team. You guys will forget very soon. A lot of people keep talking about New Zealand.
“I am the same guy under whom we won the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup as well. This is a team which has less experience and I have said it before, they need to keep learning and they are doing everything possible to turn the tide”.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Gautam Gambhir in the tests. The next match that India plays in the format will be after nine months.
