Gautam Gambhir is the front-runner to become the next India head coach after Rahul Dravid.

After India lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir shared a personal story regarding the India vs Australia match at the 1992 World Cup.

With legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the India head coach coming to an end after the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, many reports have claimed that Gambhir is all set to become the new head coach of the men’s senior team.

Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah revealed that the new head coach’s stint will start with the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka later this month. VVS Laxman will travel with the Men in Blue for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, starting on 6 July, in the form of an interim coach.

I cried that entire night: Gautam Gambhir

Recently, Gambhir shared an emotional story of the night he cried a lot following India’s loss to Australia by one run at the 1992 World Cup in Brisbane. The former opener further added that he hadn’t cried like that since.

After seeing a match, I wanted to win the World Cup for India. I remember the 1992 India-Australia World Cup game in Brisbane, which India lost by one run and I actually remember that I cried the entire night. I have never cried like that before or after that and I don’t know why,” Gambhir told Sportskeeda.

The 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning player further said that after he cried that night, he made a promise to himself that he would win the World Cup for the national side, a dream which he achieved in 2011. Gambhir was India’s top-scorer in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka.

“I was an 11-year-old at that time. I cried the entire night and said that I want to win the World Cup for India. I said that in 1992 and I was able to fulfill that dream in 2011. I would have felt unhappy before or after that match, but I didn’t used to cry like that,” Gautam Gambhir added.

I remember Venkatapathy Raju getting run out and India lost by one run. The match used to come early in the morning, so I used to watch that game after waking up at five in the morning, but I was never as sad before or after that game,” he concluded.
