Not Hardik Pandya! Gautam Gambhir wants this player to captain India in T20 World Cup 2024

Former Indian player Gautam Gambhir opined on who should captain India in the T20 World Cup 2024.
As the cricketing world shifts its focus from the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 to the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024, Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has voiced his preference for the captaincy role in the T20 format.
Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, showcased a commendable performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, reaching the finals but falling short against Australia. Rohit Sharma’s stellar batting form, scoring 597 runs, played a pivotal role in India’s journey in the title clash. Despite the absence of both Rohit and Virat Kohli in T20Is for over a year, Gautam Gambhir is advocating for their inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad based on their exceptional performances in the ODI format.
Gautam Gambhir roots for Rohit Sharma
Gambhir, a cricketing legend himself, emphasized the need for both Rohit and Kohli to be included in the T20 World Cup squad, despite their absence from the shortest format of the game. Gambhir said sportskeeda, “They both need to get picked, both should be picked, and more importantly, I want to see Rohit Sharma as captain in the T20 World Cup.” Gambhir’s support for Rohit’s captaincy is grounded in the belief that his leadership skills are as formidable as his batting capabilities, as evidenced in the ODI World Cup.
Highlighting his point, Gambhir addressed the ongoing captaincy debate, especially with Hardik Pandya leading the T20I side. Despite acknowledging Pandya’s captaincy stint, Gambhir insisted on Rohit Sharma taking up the captaincy role, emphasizing, “Yes, Hardik has been captaining in T20Is but I still want to see Rohit as captain in the World Cup. Don’t pick Rohit Sharma just as a batter. Rohit is a phenomenal leader and has proved that with his batting in this ODI World Cup,”
Further elucidating his stance, Gambhir outlined the conditions for Rohit’s selection, stating that if Rohit chooses to participate in the T20 World Cup, he should be considered not just as a batsman but as a captain who can contribute with the bat. This viewpoint aligns with Gambhir’s vision of a well-rounded team led by a captain with proven leadership abilities.
