Gautam Gambhir's appointment as India head coach done deal, official announcement soon – Reports

Gautam Gambhir is very close to taking up the India head coach role as he and the BCCI secretary Jay Shah had a long discussion on the sidelines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final. The deadline for applying for the said job ended on May 27 and the BCCI has not disclosed the list of applicants as of yet.

However, Gambhir, who is the mentor of the IPL 2024 winning team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was reported to be the front-runner for the head coach role. Current head coach, Rahul Dravid’s tenure comes to an end after the T20 World Cup 2024 and he has refused BCCI’s offer to continue.

The new head coach will have a three-year all-format contract that will run till the ICC World Cup 2027.

Gautam Gambhir is highly regarded as a leader, as under his captaincy KKR won the IPL title twice in 2012 and 2014, and then as a mentor of Lucknow Super Giants, he guided the team to playoffs in IPL 2022 and 2023.

Gambhir’s appointment as India coach will undoubtedly be more difficult than his transition from the Lucknow Super Giants to the Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir is thought to be considering all options.

Gambhir, a successful television expert and now an equally successful coach and leader, has numerous employment choices. The India position will not allow him to work in numerous professional roles, known as “double dipping,” as he can in other professions.

The India job takes nearly 10 months of travel, which is a considerable hardship for someone with a young family. Gambhir is thought to have taken five breaks throughout his two-month spell with the Knight Riders.

However, the India head coach job has its profile, allure, and stature. For someone recognized for taking a no-nonsense, aggressive attitude to his job, the role might be extremely rewarding.

Gambhir has told people close to him that he is considering the approach. Even KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan is aware of this.

On the other hand, a very high-profile owner of an IPL franchise, who is very close to the BCCI top brass, told Cricbuzz that Gambhir’s appointment is a done deal and the announcement will come soon.

The fact that no statement has yet been made shows that negotiations are taking place on numerous fronts, including between the two parties and possibly with outsiders.
