“We still aren't where we want to” - Gautam Gambhir shockingly admits India are not ready for ICC T20 World Cup 2026

Gautam Gambhir is yet to lose a T20I bilateral series or tournament as India’s coach.
Indian Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir has come up with a strong message for his team ahead of ICC T20 World Cup 2026. He admitted that they are still not where they want to be ahead of the tournament, adding that he wants to have a transparent dressing room.
Gautam Gambhir as a T20I coach has been sensational. Under him, India are yet to lose a bilateral series as they have played fearless brand, dominating teams both at home as well as away. Not only this, India also won Asia Cup 2025 under him without losing a single game.
India recently won the T20I series against Australia as well by a margin of 2-1. Although Gautam Gambhir was criticised a lot for his team combination, he replied by winning the series and different XI’s in different games probably were to see what combination fits for the big event, ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Gambhir’s focus will be on \ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in India and Sri Lanka. Having won ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well, he would be keen to win the next ICC tournament, which will be a home event for India.

Gambhir said that they have a very honest dressing room and that is how he wants it to be. He also mentioned they are not ready for ICC T20 World Cup 2026 but they still have three months to be there where they want to be. Speaking in a video posted by the BCCI, he said:
“It has been a very transparent dressing room, it has been a very honest dressing room and that is how we want this dressing room to be. I think we still aren’t where we want to be come the T20 World Cup. Hopefully guys know the importance of being fit. We still have three months to be where we want to be.”
Gambhir also talked about his mantra as a coach, saying that he wants to throw players into deep sea and then see what they do. He added that he did the same thing with Shubman Gill as well when he was appointed as the test captain. He added:
“Throw guys in the deep sea, as simple as it can get. We did the same with Shubman (Gill) as well when he was appointed as Test captain.”
