The BCCI contacted Gautam Gambhir to offer him the head coach role of the Indian men’s cricket team with Rahul Dravid’s tenure coming to an end in June.

In a major development regarding the next head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, Gautam Gambhir has reportedly shown “interest” in the role after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approached the former batsman.

Gautam Gambhir, who is currently mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, was contacted by the BCCI to be the successor of Rahul Dravid, whose tenure as India’s head coach will conclude at the end of the ICC T20 World Cup in June.

Earlier this month, the board had released a statement inviting applications for the head coach role. The deadline for applying for the job is May 27, which is a day after KKR will face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 final in Chennai.

Gautam Gambhir ready to leave KKR’s mentorship role to become India’s head coach – Reports

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, Gambhir is keen to become India’s next head coach and is ready to leave his position as the mentor of the Knight Riders.

Gambhir, who had led KKR to their twin IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, had returned to the franchise in the form of a mentor. Straightaway he made an instant impact by guiding KKR to the top of the points table in the league phase for the first time in IPL history.

KKR defeated Pat Cummins-led SRH in Qualifier 1 and now are only one victory away from securing their third IPL trophy. Gambhir’s stocks as a coach shot up with KKR’s success this season.

It has been reported that the 42-year-old former India opener will have a meeting with the BCCI officials on the sidelines of the IPL 2024 final in Chennai, and if he is satisfied with the board’s terms, Gambhir would apply for the India head coach’s role.

Recently, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah hinted that the board is looking for an Indian to replace Dravid, shutting down the reports that the board had approached Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer.

Shah said, “Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks.”
