Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of selectors ended a few days ago.
Indian cricket has witnessed another major change behind the scenes, with Ajit Agarkar’s tenure ending as the BCCI chief selector. His exit brings an end to a three-year period in which the selection committee handled several important decisions involving India’s senior players and the team’s leadership.
Agarkar took charge of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023. During his tenure, India went through several changes across formats while also enjoying major success in ICC tournaments.
India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and then won the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy and 2026 T20 World Cup. Following Agarkar’s exit, India head coach Gautam Gambhir shared an emotional message for the former chief selector on social media.

Gautam Gambhir highlighted the three ICC trophies won during Agarkar’s tenure and praised his approach towards putting the team first. The two worked together during an important period for Indian cricket.
Gautam Gambhir’s message also came shortly after Agarkar officially left his position, with the BCCI now set to begin the process of finding his replacement.
“Dear Ajit Bhai, an absolute honour to work with you. Those 3 ICC trophies are a testimony of your conviction: Team first & Team ahead, always. I must say, History will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything. My heartfelt wishes for your future endeavours !!”
Agarkar and Gambhir worked together as India went through an important phase after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Gambhir became India’s head coach in 2024, while Agarkar continued to lead the selection committee.
Their time together saw India win the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. India also lifted the 2026 T20 World Cup, giving the team three ICC trophies during Agarkar’s tenure.
Apart from the ICC titles, India also won the 2023 and 2025 Asia Cups. The team won gold in men’s T20 cricket at the 2023 Asian Games and added another gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.
