It's official! BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirms Gautam Gambhir's appointment as India head coach
Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India head coach will begin with India’s tour of Sri Lanka in July-August.
In a significant development for Indian cricket, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has officially announced the appointment of former India opener Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team. This announcement follows after the conclusion of Rahul Dravid‘s contract, which ended on a high note with India winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Jay Shah shared the news via a post on X (formerly twitter), expressing his confidence in Gambhir’s ability to lead the team into a new era.
“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward,” Shah stated.

Furthermore he went on and added, “His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey.”
Gambhir’s appointment is seen as a strategic move, given his extensive experience and deep understanding of modern cricket dynamics. His vision for Team India and his hands-on experience in international cricket make him a fitting successor to Dravid. The BCCI has expressed full support for Gambhir as he embarks on this critical role.
Gambhir’s immediate challenges include preparing the team for the World Test Championship final at Lord’s next year and the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Additionally, he faces the significant task of finding replacements for retiring stalwarts such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, who have been pillars of the team in T20I cricket.
With Gambhir at the helm, Indian cricket fans have high hopes for continued success at international stage. His leadership and strategic insight are expected to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors, driving Team India to new heights in the coming years.
