India team head coach Gautam Gambhir has backed Shubman Gill to improve as a captain, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, despite much speculation, remain in the squad.
During India’s tour of England earlier this year, conversations about Rohit Sharma‘s last series flared up. Multiple reports claimed that the former Indian captain had been informed it would be his last ODI series. However, the reports were eventually refuted by the BCCI.
Currently, it seems the 39-year-old will remain part of the Indian side for the upcoming World Cup, scheduled for October 2027 on the African continent. During a recent interview, Gautam Gambhir opened up about his relationship with Rohit.

Gautam Gambhir recently talked about his equation with Rohit Sharma in the Indian team. He stated that Rohit is one of the most senior players in the Indian line-up, and he has been leading the Men in Blue for a long time.
Gambhir also revealed that his relationship with Rohit is more than just that of a player and a coach. The two have also played for India together; thus, they share a bond that is almost two decades old. The Indian head coach also claimed that due to his personal understanding with Rohit, things became easier for the team. He said:
“See, Rohit’s and my relationship wasn’t just that of captain and coach. Rohit’s and my relationship goes back to when Rohit came into the team and I was a senior player at that time. So Rohit’s and my relationship dates back to then.”
“Rohit knew me from then. It’s not like Rohit and I had a new relationship, or that I came in as a coach from a foreign country who had neither seen Rohit play nor knew him individually or personally, or what kind of person he is. So often, when you have played together, things become very easy. In fact, he knows my thinking and I know his thinking.”
Adding to what he said about Rohit, the former Indian opening batsman stated that the captain and the coach aim to work in the best interests of the team, even if they disagree on a certain issue.
