[Watch] Gautam Gambhir reacts to Rahul Dravid's message ahead of debut as India head coach

Gautam Gambhir will begin his stint as India head coach on Saturday against Sri Lanka.

India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir got emotional after hearing a heartfelt message from his predecessor, Rahul Dravid, ahead of his first game in his new role.

Gambhir will begin his tenure as the Indian men’s cricket team head coach on Saturday when India take on Sri Lanka for the first of the three-match T20I series in Pallekele. The T20I series will be followed by an ODI series.

On Saturday, the BCCI shared a video in which Gambhir reacted to a voice message from Dravid.

Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach ended last month. He departed with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, ending India’s 11-year wait for an ICC silverware.

Rahul Dravid left a voice message for Gambhir in which he admired Gambhir’s characteristics as a cricketer and mentor.

In his message, Dravid said, “I know how dedicated and passionate you are about Indian cricket, and I’m sure you will bring all these qualities into this new job. For the fans who are very demanding but will always be behind the team, from one Indian cricket coach to another, one last thing in the most heated of times exhale, take a step back, and even if it’s difficult for you, crack a smile. Whatever else happens, that will shock people.“

Gambhir rarely shows his emotions. But this time he expressed how much Dravid’s message meant to him and how deeply he was touched by the kind words from the former coach.

Gambhir said, “I think I don’t get too emotional normally. But I think this message actually made me a lot emotional, which normally I assume, but it’s a great message. Hopefully, I can. It’s massive shoes to fill. Hopefully, I can do it with aptitude, honesty, transparency and, hopefully, I can make the entire nation proud.”
