Gautam Gambhir rushed back to India from the United Kingdom on 12th June.

Indian Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir is all set to fly back to England just ahead of the test series. As per the reports in Times of India, it is learned that he will be joining the team on 17th June (Tuesday) as the health of his mother his gradually improving.

Just ahead of the intra-squad game between India and India A, head coach Gautam Gambhir rushed back to India on 12th June. This was because his mother suffered a heart attack and was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a hospital in Delhi.

With Gautam Gambhir rushing back home, there were a lot of speculations about when the head coach would join the team. However, in a positive development, it is learned that he will be there just before the first test against England, which is all set to begin from 20th June at Headingly in Leeds.

This comes as a huge positive development for India as Gambhir, who went to England with the entire squad on 5th June, was closely following the practice sessions. He was also seen putting in hard yards with the players, making sure he makes them battle-ready for the first series of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27.

In the absence of Gautam Gambhir, the intra-squad game between India and India A was overseen by assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and bowling coach Morne Morkel. The game was called off after three days as players had a good time in the middle.

The England series will be important for Gautam Gambhir as a coach

The upcoming test series against England will be an important one for Gautam Gambhir in the context of his coaching career. As a coach in tests, he hasn’t been able to make a mark as the team suffered a whitewash against New Zealand at home and then faced a 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, it will be an inexperienced Indian team. Shubman Gill will be leading the team with Rishabh Pant being deputy. They would be keen to script history and win the first-ever series in England since 2007.
