India head coach Gautam Gambhir had a heated argument with pitch curator at The Oval.
Two days before the fifth and final test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and the ground crew of The Oval got into a furious argument on Tuesday. Tuesday was supposed to be the first practice session for India, who arrived in London on Monday.
India trail the five-match test series against England 1-2, having lost at Headingley and the Lord’s, while winning the Edgbaston test. India also batted out of their skins to save the 4th test that was played in Manchester. England had posted 669 runs in response to India’s 358 in the first innings, and then dismissed two Indian wickets in the first over itself.
But then KL Rahul (90) and Shubman Gill (103) added 188 runs for the third wicket to frustrate England bowlers. After their dismissals, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar dug their heels in and batted over two sessions to ensure India drew the match. Jadeja made 107* and Sundar made 101* as they added 203 unbeaten runs to save the match for India.
Gautam Gambhir and Oval pitch curator Lee Fortis get into a heated argument
Sparks flew Tuesday afternoon after India head coach Gautam Gambhir got into a furious argument with Lee Fortis, the main pitch curator, prior to the highly anticipated match at The Oval.
According to a report in Times of India, head coach Gautam Gambhir was not pleased with the amenities offered to the visiting team. Coach Gambhir seemed extremely enraged as the discussion turned into a serious altercation.
He was heard yelling, “You can’t tell us what to do!” and constantly pointing fingers at the ground crew. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and other Indian support staff had to separate the pair due to the tense scenario.
The report further added that The Oval’s ground staff have threatened to lodge a complaint against the India head coach. Unfazed, Gambhir reportedly shouted back, “You can go and report to whoever you want, but you can’t tell us what to do.”
