Gautam Gambhir has been under a lot of scrutiny for his poor record as a test coach.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir and team management have been targeted by former India opener Aakash Chopra for a lack of clarity over the injury issues in the team ahead of the fourth test against England in Manchester.
Since the third test defeat, the visitors’ camp has been grappling with injuries, including bowler Arshdeep Singh’s hand injury acquired during a practice session. Following him, pacer Akash Deep had a groin strain during the third test at Lord’s.
Later, the BCCI stated that all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy will miss the remaining tests due to a knee ailment. On July 21, the BCCI confirmed that Arshdeep Singh was ruled out of the fourth test and Nitish Kumar Reddy will come back to India for treatment of his knee injury.
Also, Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj was officially included in the Indian squad as a replacement.
“Should’ve kept Harshit Rana as well.” – Aakash Chopra questions Gautam Gambhir
Before the series began, India selected pacer Harshit Rana for the squad of the first test. However, he was later released. Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Team India should have chosen Rana instead of Kamboj to maintain continuity.
“It’s very interesting. There was a lot of chatter about Anshul Kamboj. He did well for India A as well, but when there was an opportunity earlier, the team management chose Harshit Rana first. Anshul was sent back home, and now we are learning about his name again.“
“Harshit Rana is not there. Now you have to wonder, what actually goes on? How do you determine who to keep and who to let go of? If you talk about performances for India A, Anshul’s performance was better, but you kept Harshit Rana looking at continuity,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Chopra further stated that there is no clarity at all regarding the selection process, but also called Kamboj a “deserving player.”
“If that was the case, then you should have kept Harshit Rana now as well. But he is not there; Anshul Kamboj is there. No clarity whatsoever. Maybe the management knows, but nobody is telling us anything. This comes as no surprise. Anshul Kamboj was deserving; he is now with the team,” he added.
