Gautam Gambhir’s appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, July 9.
In a significant development for Indian cricket, Gautam Gambhir has been confirmed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team taking over the reigns from Rahul Dravid. This announcement comes as a result of Gambhir’s growing influence and strategic acumen within the cricketing fraternity.
On Tuesday, July 9, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah confirmed the appointment through a post on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward.”
“His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey.” Jay Shah further added.
Gautam Gambhir, a former opening batsman known for his tenacity and leadership on the field, has gradually transitioned into coaching after retiring from international cricket in 2018. He recently mentored Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, where they won the title after a long gap of 10 years. Before that, Gambhir also served as mentor of Lucknow Super Giants.
His appointment as head coach marks an important moment in Indian cricket, aligning with the team’s vision for sustained excellence and development of a new generation of players.
Until when will Gautam Gambhir stay as Indian Cricket Team’s head coach ?
One of the big question that arises following Gautam Gambhir’s appointment is, until when will he remain as head coach of the Indian side? Recently Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India head coach came to an end with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He began his stint after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and then his contract originally expired after the ODI World Cup in 2023. However, after captain Rohit Sharma’s intervention, Dravid then extended his contract till end of T20 World Cup last month.
When BCCI invited applications for the post of head coach of senior men’s cricket team a couple of months back, it had stated that the board is looking for someone who can coach the national side until the end of 2027 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Hence, Gautam Gambhir will remain as head coach of the Indian Cricket Team until December 2027.
Looking ahead, Gautam Gambhir’s coaching tenure will encompass several major tournaments, including multiple ICC events and bilateral series across the globe. His leadership will be crucial in shaping the team’s strategies, fostering a winning mentality, and ensuring a smooth transition of skills from one generation of players to the next.
The 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, slated to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, will serve as a pinnacle moment for Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff. It presents an opportunity for India to showcase their prowess on the world stage under Gambhir’s guidance and strategic vision.
