According to reports, Gautam Gambhir will take up Indian Cricket Team’s head coach role.
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is all set to bid adieu to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), according to reports. He shot an emotional farewell video with the franchise at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on July 5, according to reports.
Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Gambhir was roped in by the Kolkata-based franchise and was made mentor of the team for 2024 edition.
This move by the Kolkata franchise struck gold as under Gambhir’s mentorship, the franchise lifted the IPL 2024 trophy defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the grand finale. The Shreyas Iyer-led KKR ended their 10-year IPL title drought. As captain of the side, Gambhir guided KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.
It was a low-key affair, but Gambhir wanted to say goodbye
According to a latest report in Times Now, a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official confirmed that Gambhir was present at the Eden Gardens on Friday, July 5.
The CAB official said that it was an emotional moment, but Gambhir wanted to bid goodbye to his fans with a special message. That’s why they shot the video.
The Times Now report further added that the farewell video was shot by Gambhir’s personal team and not by the IPL 2024 champions, KKR.
“It was a low-key affair, but Gambhir wanted to bid goodbye to his fans with a message and that is why they shot a video at the Eden,” a CAB official told the news outlet.
Gautam Gambhir all set to become the new head coach of Indian cricket team
Legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid’s second tenure as the Indian cricket team head coach has come to an end after his side lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on June 29 in Barbados. Before the ICC tournament began, Dravid confirmed that he will not re-apply for the post of head coach.
With BCCI looking for a new head coach, many reports have confirmed that the 2007 World T20 and 2011 World Cup winner Gambhir is all set to replace Dravid and become the new head coach of senior men’s Indian cricket team.
However, the BCCI is expected to make an announcement on the same in the coming days ahead of the Sri Lanka white-ball series in July. Earlier, BCCI president Roger Binny more or less confirmed that Gambhir will be the next head coach of the Indian side.
“Gautam Gambhir has got a lot of experience and if he takes the job it’s definitely going to be a good thing for Indian cricket. He is experienced that’s what India needs. India needs a coach who played the game, and he has played in all three formats of the game,” Roger Binny told ANI.
