India have lost two consecutive test series under Gautam Gambhir.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir refrained from giving away his thoughts regarding the place of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the test team following the loss in the Sydney test, which meant India lost to Australia in a test series after four consecutive series wins over the Kangaroos.
India had come to Australian shores under huge scrutiny after their 3-0 whitewash at home to New Zealand. While they produced a spirited performance in Perth, things when downhill after that.
They lost the series 3-1, lost the grip on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and fluffed their chance to reach the ICC WTC final for a third consecutive time.
While the bowlers held their own most of the times and kept the side in the contests, India were heavily let down by their batsmen, especially their two most senior batsmen, Rohit and Kohli.
Rohit scored 31 runs in five innings wit a highest score of 10 and dropped himself before the last test. Kohli scored 190 runs in nine innings, with 100 of them coming in one knock in Perth. The pair also had a poor series against New Zealand: in six innings, Rohit scored 91 runs and Kohli scored 93.
This dismal form of the senior duo has raised questions over their place in the test side. India will begin their WTC 2025-27 journey in June, and the pair would have aged further till then.
It’s up to them: Gautam Gambhir on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future in test side
At the press conference in Sydney, Gambhir was queried about the future of Rohit and Kohli in the test side. While Gambhir said that both still have the hunger, he said that they will make their decisions on their own, whatever is best for the team.
“I can’t talk about the future of any player. It’s up to them. But, yes, what i can say is they still have the hunger, they still have the passion. They are tough people. I hope they will do everything they can to take Indian cricket forward. But, like I said, whatever they do, they will plan for the best interests of Indian cricket,” the head coach said.
