Shreyas Iyer was dismissed after scoring 33 runs in 29 balls against New Zealand.

Indian top-order had a terrific start against New Zealand in Dharamsala. Captain Rohit Sharma (46), Shubman Gill (26), and Shreyas Iyer (33) all made magnificent starts to their innings chasing 274 against New Zealand. Even after a great start, they failed to capitalize on the momentum and threw their wickets away. Shreyas Iyer once again succumbed to a short-pitched delivery, raising several concerns about his temperament to tackle short-ball.

Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar was not amused by the way Shreyas Iyer threw his wicket away in the game. Both of them have criticized Indian batter severely after his poor dismissal. Shreyas Iyer scored 33 runs off 29 balls with six boundaries. Shreyas Iyer has a history against short-pitched bowling, and Kiwi pacers used his weakness to their advantage in the game. Lockie Ferguson and Trent Boult kept attacking Iyer with short deliveries.

Sanjay Bangar slams Shreyas Iyer

Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar said that Shreyas Iyer lost his cool due to his ego of playing pull-shot every short ball. Bangar said, “You can’t play pull shots on every ball. We know Shreyas Iyer has worked a lot on his pull shots lately, but you cannot play them all the time. Shreyas should learn from a senior player at the other end, Virat Kohli. Kohli is not looking to overdo things and attempt one shot all the time. He shouldn’t let his ego get the better of him."

Earlier in the previous game, legendary opening batter Sunil Gavaskar was miffed with Shreyas Iyer’s intent. Iyer lost his wicket on just 19 runs against Bangladesh due to a poor shot. Gavaskar said on that occasion, “He (Iyer) lost his patience. He was batting on 19 and threw his wicket away.” Gavaskar cited the example of Virat and added, “Kohli never does that. Kohli will seldom throw his wicket away. He makes you earn his wicket."

Team India are 5 wickets down until the 35th over in their chase. After losing their top-order, Team India also lost KL Rahul plumb in front against Mitchell Santner, and Suryakumar Yadav had a terrible mix-up on his World Cup debut. Suryakumar (2) walked back early due to a mix-up with Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli is going strong in India’s chase once again, and he is closing in on his record 49th ODI century for India.
