"Sending the right signal" Sunil Gavaskar lavishes rich praise on Shubman Gill for playing Duleep Trophy 2025 after hectic ENG vs IND series

Shubman Gill will captain the North Zone team in the Duleep Trophy 2025.

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar lauded the Indian Cricket Team skipper Shubman Gill for making himself available for the Duleep Trophy 2025-26. He said that by playing the domestic tournament, the captain is sending the right message to his team. 

Shubman Gill, ever since he has been appointed as the skipper of test side, is setting the example by leading from the front. In his first series as a captain, he proved his mettle and scored truckloads of runs, ending as the highest run-getter in the series against England. 

When he was appointed as the test captain, there were a lot of doubts over that decision. But, he proved everyone wrong as in testing English conditions, he scored 754 runs, which included three centuries and one double century as well. 

Following the England tour, Shubman Gill also made himself available to play the Duleep Trophy. The premier batter will be leading the North Zone team, and this surely will be a great motivation for all the young players.

Sunil Gavaskar was impressed by Shubman Gill’s decision, saying that the batter could’ve opted to rest, but by making himself available, he sent a great message. He also suggested that fast bowlers from the England tour should rest. Writing in his column for Sportstar, he said: 

“Shubman Gill, captaining the North Zone team, is a massive shot in the arm for this tournament. By being available, the Indian skipper is sending the right signal to the other members of the team. It would have been understandable if, after a gruelling tour where five Test matches were crammed into a little over six weeks, he had opted to rest.”

“The fast bowlers not playing is good thinking, as it has been an unusually hot summer in England, thanks to global warming, and their energies must have been expended after the untiring spells they bowled throughout the series.” 

The Duleep Trophy 2025 will begin on 28th August and the tournament has reverted to its traditional zonal format, featuring four teams.
