Chris Gayle said that Virat Kohli is a massive figure in test cricket.
Former West Indies batter Chris Gayle has shared his opinions on Virat Kohli’s retirement from test cricket. The legendary Caribbean opener feels that the Indian batter retired very early from the longest format of the game and will be missed.
Kohli announced his retirement from test cricket in May this year, ahead of India’s tour of England 2025. His retirement news came just a few days after Rohit Sharma retired from the longest format of the game.
During his 15-year-long career from 2011 to 2025, the right-handed batsman played 123 tests for India. He smacked 9230 runs in 210 innings at an average of 46.85, hammering 30 centuries and 31 fifties.

During a conversation on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel, Gayle said that Kohli retired from test cricket very early. He also termed him a massive figure in test cricket.
“Oh yeah, very early. Very early. You know, for whatever reason, I don’t know, but Cricket will miss him 100%. Cricket will miss him. He’s a massive, massive figure for the game of cricket,” he said.
Gayle also said that he was happy to witness Kohli lifting the trophy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Notably, Gayle joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during their victory celebrations after the IPL 2025 final. He was part of the team from 2011 to 2017.
“I’m just happy a guy like Virat lifted the trophy as well, because you know there was so much talk here and there. We’d been to a couple of finals together, so I was really overwhelmed to actually be a part of that RCB team, to lift the trophy. And just as I’m happy, I’m sure AB was just as excited for RCB as well,” he said.
Kohli showed a wonderful form in IPL 2025, finishing as the third highest run-scorer in the tournament with 657 runs. The right-handed batsman will be next seen in the ODI series against Australia in October. According to reports, Kohli might also play for India A during the upcoming unofficial ODI series against Australia A.
