David Warner earlier informed he would come out of retirement if selected for ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

On July 15, 2024, Australia’s men’s national selector George Bailey confirmed that now retired cricketer David Warner will not be considered for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Last year, Warner announced that he would retire from tests after playing the test series against Pakistan in January 2024.

Ahead of the final test against the Men in Green In January 2024, the 37-year-old Warner announced he would also step away from ODI and T20I cricket as well. He announced ODI World Cup 2023 was his last in 50-over cricket, while T20 World Cup 2024 would be last in the shortest format. During the announcement, Warner hinted that he was open to come out of ODI retirement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

After the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Warner through an Instagram post confirmed he ended his international cricket career with Australia’s campaign at the event coming to an end. Even in that post, he reiterated that he would come back to play for Australia at ICC Champions Trophy 2025 if selected.

“Chapter closed!! It’s been an unbelievable experience to play at the highest level for such a long period. Australia was my team. The majority of my career was at the international level. It’s been an honour to be able to do this. 100+ games in all formats is my highlight,” Warner wrote in an Instagram post on Monday.

“I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for Australia in the Champions trophy if selected,” he added.

Warner won’t be there in Pakistan for CT25: George Bailey

On July 15, 2024, Cricket Australia (CA) announced squads for the upcoming tour of UK, where they will play three T20Is against Scotland and then three T20Is and five ODIs against England starting in September. CA named a new look lineup keeping the future in mind.

CA named all-rounder Mitchell Marsh as skipper of both the squads, whereas regular captain Pat Cummins has been rested for the upcoming UK tour due to workload management.

During the announcement of the squad, Australia’s national men’s selector Bailey said that they understand what Warner has done across all three formats, but the think tank is not considering him for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

“Our understanding is that David is retired, and [he] should be commended on what has been an incredible career across all three formats. Certainly, our planning is that he won’t be there in Pakistan,” George Bailey said.

Bailey further added that Warner had a wonderful career for Australia, and his legacy will continue to grow for what he has done in all three formats.

“You never know when Bull’s joking…think he’s just stirring the pot a bit. He’s had a wonderful career, can’t celebrate it enough, and think as time goes by, his legacy of what he has done for Australia and we reflect back on that, the legend of a player is only going to continue to grow. But as far as this team goes and the journey to transition to some different players, in his case across all three formats, it’s going to be exciting.” Bailey added.
