Shreevats Goswami said that the current Indian team misses the winning mentality and fire that Virat Kohli had in his captaincy.
Former India cricketer Shreevats Goswami said that the current Indian Cricket Team lacks the winning mentality they had under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. He also added that Kohli should have left ODI cricket and continued playing tests.
His comments come after India’s dismal performance in the ongoing second test against South Africa at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The hosts failed to dominate South Africa in the first innings as the visitors piled up 489 runs.
Moreover, India completely struggled with the bat, getting bowled out for just 201 runs. India faced a 30-run defeat in the first test and trail 1-0 in the two-match series. India, who are known for their home supremacy, have lacked their dominance in the ongoing series.
Last year, India suffered a humiliating 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home, and then recently won 2-0 against West Indies. However, they have completely struggled to overpower the Proteas in the ongoing series, losing a test encounter against them after 15 years at home in the opening game.
Fire which was there under Virat Kohli feels missing in this team: Shreevats Goswami

Sharing a photo of Kohli on his Instagram account, Goswami said that the current test team misses the energy and passion Kohli brought under his leadership. He also feels that the former India captain should not have retired from test cricket.
“Ideally, Virat should have left playing ODIs & continued playing Test cricket until he had nothing to give. Test cricket misses him. Not just as a player but just the energy he brought, the love & passion playing for India where he made the team believe that they can win in any condition. The winning mentality & that fire which was there under Virat Kohli feels missing in this team,” he wrote.
Notably, Kohli is the most successful test captain for India. He led the team in 68 tests, winning 40 and losing 17 games. 11 matches ended in draws. He is often credited for forming a deadly test side, which dominated opposition on their home.
The right-handed batsman announced his retirement from test cricket earlier in May, hitting 9230 in 123 games at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.
