New information from the British Transport Police has revealed how Graham Thorpe died.
Just a day after his wife claimed that Graham Thorpe “took his own life,” it has been confirmed that the former England batsman died after being struck by a train.
On August 5th, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced that Graham Thorpe, a veteran of 100 test matches, had passed away at the age of 55.
A week after the confirmation of his death, his wife Amanda revealed Thorpe had been battling major depression and anxiety over the last few years and that he “took his own life”. She also revealed that the former cricketer had previously made a “serious attempt” on his life in 2022, which resulted in him being hospitalised.
Graham Thorpe was pronounced dead at the railway station
The method of his death has now been learned: Coroner Simon Wickens said Thorpe died from the multiple injuries that he sustained after being hit by a train at Esther railway station.
In the inquest of his death on Tuesday, Wickens said he received a referral from British Transport Police: “Officers were called to Esher railway station at 8.26am on August 4 to reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”
Wickens then confirmed that the body was identified by way of fingerprint comparison from an item at Thorpe’s last known address.
Graham Thorpe had four children with two wives, Amanda and ex-wife Nicky.
Amanda told The Times, “Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better. He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.”
Thorpe featured in 100 tests and 82 ODIs for England. He scored 6744 test runs at an average of 44 and cracked 16 centuries. In ODIs, he scored 2380 runs at 37.
After retirement, he became a full-time coach. He was with the England team from 2010 to 2022, initially as a batting coach and then as assistant coach to Chris Silverwood.
