Top 10 greatest Indian cricketers who never won T20 World Cup ft. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid

Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid feature in the list of Indian cricketers who never won the T20 World Cup.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the pinnacle of the shortest format of the game. India have been the most successful nation in the tournament, having won it a record three times.

They won it for the first time in 2007 when the tournament was just inaugurated, and later won it back-to-back in 2024 and 2026. The wait between the first and second trophies was very long, but it brought satisfaction to the players and fans who had yearned for it.

In 2024, a legend of the game like Virat Kohli finally lifted the trophy, while Rohit Sharma won it for the second time. In 2026, a relatively young team participated and successfully defended the title.

In between all this, there have been some legendary players who did not have the luck to either play in the tournament or win it. They gave their all for Indian cricket and yet failed to get their hands on the prestigious T20 trophy in the shortest format.

On that note, let’s have a look at the top 10 greatest Indian players who never won the T20 World Cup title.

Greatest Indian players who never won the T20 World Cup-

10. Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina was one of the finest T20 batsmen of India. He displayed his excellent batting skills in the shortest format of cricket in the Indian Premier League and for the national team.

He made his ICC Men’s T20 World Cup debut in 2009 and went on to play five T20 World Cups, but never had the fortune of winning the tournament. He scored a brilliant century against South Africa in the 2010 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, becoming the first Indian player to score a century in T20 Internationals.

9. Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra was known for his lethal left-arm pace bowling. He was an important part of the Indian national cricket team in the white-ball format for a period of time.

He made his T20 International debut in 2009 and participated in the 2010 and 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cups. He took 15 wickets in total and had an economy rate of less than 7. Despite his good performances, he never managed to get his hands on the trophy.

8. Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami has been a vital cog for India across all three formats and has proven time and again that he is a great bowler in pressure situations. He has also shown his brilliance in the shortest format.

He featured in three editions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, first in 2014 and later in 2021 and 2022, but failed to win the trophy. He was injured and missed selection for the 2024 edition, which the Indian team eventually won.

7. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the best spinners ever to wear India’s jersey. With his incredible skills, he created his own legacy, and especially in Test Cricket, he was unstoppable. However, he also left his mark in the white-ball format of the game, featuring in 116 ODIs and 65 T20I matches.

He featured in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup editions of 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021, and 2022. Across these tournaments, he played 24 matches and took 32 wickets with an economy rate of 6.49. Despite his impressive performances, the team never managed to cross the line and win the trophy.

6. Zaheer Khan

Zaheer Khan is known as one of the best pace bowlers produced by India. He played a key role in helping India win the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He was a consistent member of the Indian team in both ODIs and Tests, but got only a few opportunities in the T20I side, playing just 17 T20I matches in his career.

He represented India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup editions of 2009, 2010, and 2012, but was unlucky to never get over the line and win the trophy.

5. VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman is one of the greatest Indian cricketers ever produced, but he never got a chance in T20Is for India. He represented India in more than 200 international matches, including both ODIs and Tests, and scored more than 10,000 international runs.

However, he was never seen as a batter suited for the shortest format of the game. Even though he played in the Indian Premier League, he was never selected to play T20 cricket for the Indian team and therefore never got a chance to lift the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup trophy.

4. Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly is often termed as the captain who changed Indian cricket forever. The “Prince of Kolkata” represented India in more than 400 international matches and won many games with his elegant left-handed batting style. However, he never played a single T20I game for India.

He captained Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. Later, he played for Pune Warriors India, but never got a chance to play for the Indian T20I team.

3. Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble has taken 956 wickets in his international career, the most by an Indian player in history. He is often regarded as one of the best spinners to have played the game and represented India in over 400 international matches.

However, he never played a single T20I match for India. Towards the end of his career, the T20 format was gaining popularity, and he preferred not to play it. He retired from ODI cricket in 2007 and later from Tests in 2008.

He did play in the Indian Premier League later, but never showed interest in returning to play for India in the shortest format. As a result, he never had the chance to get his hands on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup trophy.

2. Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid is known as the “Wall” of the Indian national cricket team. He represented India in over 500 international matches, but like many other legends of his era, he chose to give younger players a chance by staying away from the T20I format.

He played only one T20I match for India in 2011, and even in that game, he hit three consecutive sixes and made 31 runs. However, he never got the opportunity to represent India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

1. Sachin Tendulkar

At the top of the list is the “God of Cricket,” Sachin Tendulkar. He holds almost every major batting record and represented India in a record 663 international matches.

When T20 cricket started gaining popularity, Tendulkar decided to focus on the other two formats and give younger players opportunities in the shortest format. He was also not part of the team that won the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007.

He continued playing in the Indian Premier League for the Mumbai Indians, but played only one T20I match for India, in which he scored 10 runs.

How many runs did Sachin Tendulkar score in his only T20I game for India?

Sachin scored 10 runs against South Africa in his only T20I game.

How many T20 World Cups have India won?

India have won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 3 times, in 2007, 2024, and 2026.
