Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians’ captain before IPL 2024.
Hardik Pandya received a lot of criticism and hate from fans after leaving Gujarat Titans (GT) and being named Mumbai Indians (MI) captain.
The criticism intensified when MI faced GT in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 24. Notably, Hardik’s debut game as MI captain did not go well, as his team lost by six runs.
Despite playing for the Titans last season, Pandya couldn’t avoid the Ahmedabad crowd’s criticism. Videos circulating online show spectators booing him throughout the contest, with some even using insults. This angry reception overshadowed Pandya’s captaincy debut.
In a video, few of the fans were making disrespectful remarks like ‘chapri, chapri’ when he was leaving the ground.

GT scored 168/6 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first by new MI captain Hardik Pandya. Sai Sudharsan scored the most runs with 45, while Shubman Gill, the new GT captain, scored 35. Jasprit Bumrah grabbed 3/14, while Gerald Coetzee took two wickets for MI.
In response, Rohit Sharma scored 43 runs and Dewald Brevis 46 runs to help MI win, but the middle and lower order batsmen failed to carry the team over the line. Hardik Pandya scored 11 runs off four balls, but MI only managed 162/9 and lost by six runs.
GT will next travel to Chennai to face CSK on March 26, while MI will clash with Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad on March 27.
