Hardik Pandya has reportedly agreed to play under Rohit Sharma‘s captaincy at Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2027 if his proposed trade to another franchise does not materialise.
Mumbai Indians finished ninth in IPL 2026, managing just four wins in 14 matches. The franchise is now making changes to their setup as it looks to return to the top half of the points table next season.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Rohit has agreed to take charge of the team again after the franchise requested him to return as captain. Hardik Pandya, meanwhile, has reportedly attracted interest from other teams, with his future at MI still uncertain.

However, Hardik Pandya has reportedly attracted interest from several teams, including Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals. However, no trade deal has been finalised so far.
“If Pandya’s trade doesn’t take place, it is learnt that the player has agreed to play under Rohit’s captaincy,” the report stated.
Hardik returned to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024 and was immediately appointed captain, replacing Rohit. His return to the franchise as a player under Rohit’s leadership would mark another change in their roles.
Rohit Sharma has reportedly agreed to return as Mumbai Indians captain after discussions with the franchise management. The former skipper initially suggested Tilak Varma as a possible captaincy candidate, but the franchise wanted him to take charge again.
“Rohit initially had suggested Tilak Varma’s name but the franchise has requested him to take over captaincy which he has now agreed,” the Indian Express report stated.
Rohit led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He was replaced by Hardik ahead of the 2024 season after the all-rounder returned from Gujarat Titans.
