Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all formats. She announced the decision through an Instagram post on October 6.
“This is not an easy decision. It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life,” Harmanpreet wrote.
She said she feels she has done her duty after giving everything to the team.
“I feel I have done my duty. I leave this team everything I had,” she said.
The veteran player said she had to make several difficult decisions as captain. Some were not always understood, but she said her aim was to help the team and other players grow.
“There were moments when I had to put my individual performance, my own growth, and what I wanted for myself aside, because I believed the team had to come first,” she wrote.
Harmanpreet also thanked her teammates, coaches, support staff, management, BCCI, family and fans. She made it clear that she will continue playing cricket.
“Now, I’m ready to play for the love of the game again.”
She ended her message with:
“Captaincy ends. The journey continues.”
The end of her captaincy does not mean the end of Harmanpreet’s journey with Indian cricket. She has confirmed that she will continue playing and will now look to contribute in a different role.
The 37-year-old has spent years as one of the senior figures in the team and her experience will remain important as the side moves into its next phase. The leadership change could also allow the team to adopt a fresh approach while Harmanpreet focuses on her role as a player.
