IND vs SA: ICC punishes Harshit Rana for his aggressive celebration after dismissing Dewald Brevis in Ranchi

Harshit Rana picked up three wickets against South Africa in the first ODI.

The Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana has been reprimanded for his over-the-top celebration on the dismissal of the South African batter Dewald Brevis in the first ODI. Harshit was one of the star performers for India in Ranchi with a bowling spell that helped restrict South Africa.

India had posted a mammoth total of 349/8 batting first in Ranchi. Virat Kohli anchored India’s onslaught with the bat as he scored 135 runs in 120 balls. In other major contributions, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul also scored half-centuries.

Harshit Rana reprimanded by ICC for giving send off to Dewald Brevis

Harshit Rana was on the money in Ranchi right from his first ball. The 23-year-old dismissed Ryan Rickelton on the second delivery of the spell to give South Africa an early setback. The quick did not take much time to find his second breakthrough as he sent Quinton de Kock back for a duck.

South Africans were in a spot of bother after losing Aiden Markram in quick succession as well. But Dewald Brevis rescued the Proteas from the crisis as he made partnerships with Matthew Breetzke. His dismissal was crucial to bring India back into the game. Harshit did the job for the Men in Blue, dismissing Dewald Brevis for 37 runs off 28 balls. This important wicket elicited a fiery celebration from Rana that match officials considered a disciplinary violation.

Harshit Rana receives demerit points for his send-off to Dewald Brevis

The fast bowler from Delhi has been booked under ICC’s code of conduct. He has been handed a demerit point after ICC said Rana’s gesture “breached Article 2.5” of the code. This code refers to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter”.

A level 1 breach such as this carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
