Harshit Rana and Anshul Kamboj played for India A in unofficial test series against England Lions.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday, June 18, added pacer Harshit Rana to the Indian Cricket Team squad for the first test against the England Cricket Team at Headingley in Leeds. The Shubman Gill-led side is set to take on the Ben Stokes-led side in the opening game from June 20.
Rana was recently part of the India A squad for the unofficial test series against England Lions. The right-arm pacer was picked in the playing XI in the first unofficial test at St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury and picked up one wicket. However, he was benched in the second unofficial test at County Ground, Northampton.
Rana was asked to stay in England after the intra-squad game between India and India A, and then later, BCCI added him to the team for the first test against England. However, many cricket fans are not happy with the governing body’s decision to add Rana to the squad, as they feel Anshul Kamboj deserved to be there ahead of him.
Fans express dissent on X after BCCI pick Harshit Rana over Anshul Kamboj in India squad
Many fans criticised BCCI’s decision to choose Rana over Kamboj, as the latter showed much better form in the unofficial test series against England Lions. The 24-year-old picked five wickets across two matches to finish as India’s leading wicket-taker in the series. He also slammed an unbeaten half-century in the second unofficial test in Northampton.
Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their dissent over the selection. “Anshul Kamboj” became a trending topic on the micro-blogging site. Some also blamed India coach Gautam Gambhir for favouritism towards Rana, as he is part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Gambhir was the mentor of the side in the IPL 2024 edition, when they won the title. Have a look at some of the tweets below.
Meanwhile, Kamboj was part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025 and clinched eight wickets in an equal number of matches at an economy of 8.0, including a three-wicket haul in one encounter. He is yet to make his international debut.
