Dewald Brevis was roped in by the Pretoria Capitals for a whopping amount of R16.5 million at the SA20 2026 auction.
Former South Africa keeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen, who is rated as a T20 great, shared his take on young Proteas batter Dewald Brevis becoming the highest-paid player in the SA20 history. He said that it was a reward for his past performances, but the batter needs to focus on what’s ahead.
Young South African batter Dewald Brevis scripted history after he became the most expensive player of the SA20. The batter was roped in by the Pretoria Capitals for a whopping amount of R16.5 million, which is INR 8.31 crores, in the auction for the 2026 edition of the tournament.
Dewald Brevis, since the last few months, has made a massive stride forward in his career. First, he was called as a replacement player by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He shone with the bat, slamming 225 runs in just six outings, adding fresh energy to the struggling CSK side.
His heroics made him get into the South Africa team for the T20I series against Australia, where he was sensational. The batter hammered fifty and a century in the series and also made his presence felt during the ODI series as well.
Thanks to his efforts in the IPL, along with international cricket and his outings in previous SA20 seasons, where he played for MI Cape Town, he earned a massive contract. He would be keen to justify his price tag and help his new team win.
It’s important for Brevis to remember that the price tag he’s earned is because of what he’s already achieved – Heinrich Klaasen

Heinrich Klaasen, who has seen Dewald Brevis from close quarters, feels that it is important for young batter to remember that the price that he got was for his past performances and not what is about to come. Speaking to Jio Hotstar, he said:
“It’s important for Brevis to remember that the price tag he’s earned is because of what he’s already achieved, not what he still has to do. In this game, you can train as hard as you want and still get out first ball, that’s just part of the job. The price reflects his past performances, his work ethic, and the many boxes he’s ticked along the way, all of which give him the best chance to succeed.
“Over the next three years, I don’t see his team releasing him, so this period is about building towards the next auction and showing what more he can bring. But ultimately, that big price tag is a reward for his past performances and the potential everyone knows he has.”
The SA20 2026 will begin on 26th December this year. All eyes would be on Brevis as he takes the field in the league for his new franchise.
