Herschelle Gibbs reckoned that India should reduce the length of Indian Premier League and play more test cricket.

Former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs has suggested Indian Cricket Team to reduce the length of Indian Premier League (IPL) tournaments and focus more on playing test cricket to improve their performance in the longest format. His comments came following India’s humiliating series defeat against South Africa in the recently concluded series.

South Africa crushed India by a margin of 2-0 in the two-match series. In the first test in Kolkata, they bowled out India for 93 runs against a target of 124 runs, clinching a narrow victory by 30 runs. In the second test in Guwahati, the Temba Bavuma & Co. dominated India with both bat and ball, crushing them by 408 runs.

In the Kolkata game, South Africa clinched a test win in India after 15 years. Moreover, they bagged a clean sweep for the second time in a test series in India, having earlier won in 2000. India, who missed the services of their captain Shubman Gill in both games, registered the unwanted record of biggest test defeat by margin of runs in the Guwahati test.

In an interaction with a fan on X (formerly Twitter), former South Africa batting legend Gibbs said that India should play more tests and shorten IPL tournaments.

A fan asked Gibbs on X, “What do you thing India should do to improve?. Gibbs replied, ” Shorten IPL and play more test cricket”.

Meanwhile, while some Indian bowlers impressed with their performance in the series, batters completely failed to make a mark with none of them hitting a century across both games. This was the only third instance for India in a home test series when no batter was able to smack hundreds. The previous two instances came in 1969/70 and 1995/96 against New Zealand.
