Ricky Ponting has scored the most runs at the Gabba in test cricket.

Australia is known to produce some of the fastest wickets in the world. The Gabba in Brisbane has been no exception. The long side boundaries of the venue complement the bouncy and seaming conditions, making it even more challenging for batsmen.

Over the years, many touring teams have come and been demolished on the Queensland shores. Australia had a 32-year undefeated run in tests at the venue before India breached this fortress in 2021.

Despite the challenging conditions on offer, a few batsmen have defied the odds and played some iconic innings to guide their teams into strong positions.

On that note, let’s take a look at the top five highest individual scores at the Gabba in test cricket.

5. Greg Chappell – 201 vs Pakistan, 1981

Greg Chappell recorded a double century against Pakistan at the Gabba in second test of the 1981-82 series. Replying to Pakistan’s first innings score of 291, Chappell toiled hard to score 201 off 296 balls.

Chappel’s innings helped Australia post 512 runs in the first innings. The hosts won the game by 10 wickets and the Australian captain was named Player of the Match for his double century.

4. Keith Stackpole – 207 vs England, 1970

Former Australian opener Keith Stackpole created history against England in 1970 in Brisbane by posting the highest individual score by an opener at this venue.

Keith’s marathon knock of 207 runs consisted of 25 fours and a six. Holding on one end, he propelled Australia to 433 runs in the first innings. The test ultimately ended in a draw.

3. Sir Don Bradman – 226 vs South Africa, 1931

Regarded as the greatest test batter of all time, Sir Don Bradman hammered South Africa in the opening test of the 1937-38 series. Playing at No. 3, Bradman counterattacked, whacking 226 off 277 balls.

Bradman’s innings helped Australia post 450 runs in their first innings. The hosts won the test by an innings and 163 runs.

2. Alastair Cook – 235* vs Australia, 2010

Regarded as one the greatest test openers of all time, Alastair Cook played a marathon knock against Australia at the Gabba in Ashes 2010-11.

Cook scored 235 not out in 428 balls with the help of 26 boundaries. His innings helped England post a daunting total of 517/1 runs in their second innings.

The game ended in a draw and Cook was named Player of the Match for his 302 runs in the game.

1. Michael Clarke – 259* vs South Africa, 2012

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke holds the record for the highest individual score at the Gabba in test cricket with his knock of 259 not out against South Africa in 2012.

Replying to South Africa’s total of 450 in their first innings, Clarke recorded a double-hundred at a strike rate of over 65.

The match ended in a draw with Clarke being named Player of the Match for his fantastic double century.
