Edgbaston is one of the highest-scoring venues in test cricket, with average first-innings and second-innings totals exceeding 300. In August 2011, England piled up a gigantic total of 710/7 against India in a test match, which still ranks as the top team total at this venue.

5. West Indies – 157/3 vs England, 1991

West Indies capture the fifth spot on this list. Durigg the fourth test match of the five-match series against England in 1991, West Indies chased down a 152-run target at Edgbaston. In the first innings, England were bowled out for 188 runs.

Later, West Indies scored 292 with a century by Richie Richardson. England were then bowled out for 255 in the second innings, setting a 152-run target for the visitors. Carl Hooper (55) and skipper Viv Richards (73) scored unbeaten half-centuries to power West Indies to victory by seven wickets.

4. England – 211/3 vs New Zealand, 1999

England defeated New Zealand by seven wickets during the first test of the four-match series in 1999. In the first innings, New Zealand were bowled out for 226 before bowling out the hosts for 126.

In the second innings, New Zealand were bowled out for 107, setting a target of 208 runs for the hosts. Alex Tudor hammered a 99-run knock as England piled up 211/3 in the second innings to win the match with ease.

3. Australia – 282/8 vs England, 2023

During the Ashes 2023, England and Australia locked horns with each other in first test at Edgbaston. In the nail-biting encounter, England declared their batting at 393/8 in the first innings. Later, Australia piled up 386/10 with a century by Usman Khawaja.

Getting bowled out for 273 in the second innings, England set a target of 281 runs for the Pat Cummins-led Australia. Australia lost many wickets cheaply in the middle. Towards the end, Pat Cummins scored an unbeaten 44 runs to help Australia clinch victory by just two wickets.

2. South Africa – 283/5 vs England, 2008

In 2008, South Africa locked horns with England at Edgbaston in third test of the four-match series. England piled up 231/10 in the first innings, while South Africa replied with 314/10. In the second innings, Paul Collingwood powered England to 363/10 with his century.

The hosts set a tricky target of 281 runs for the visitors in the second innings. During the chase, visiting captain Graeme Smith scored an unbeaten 154 runs to drive South Africa to a win by five wickets. Mark Boucher also played a crucial knock, scoring 45*.

1. England – 378/3 vs India, 2022

England grab the top spot on this list with their mammoth chase of 378/3 against India at Edgbaston in July 2022. The fifth test of England’s home series against India in 2021 was postponed to 2022 due to Covid-19 outbreaks in team camps and this chase came during the rescheduled fifth test.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, England conceded 416 in the first innings, which India scored on the back of centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. Later they were bowled out for 284 runs in the first innings to give the visitors a lead of 132 runs. However, England bounced back well in the second innings bowling out India for 245 runs and setting themselves a target of 378 runs.

With hundreds from Joe Root (142) and Jonny Bairstow (114), England chased down the target to script their highest successful run-chase in test cricket history.
