Top 5 highest individual scores by Australian batsmen against India in test cricket
Only one Australian batsman has scored a triple-century against India in test cricket.
The Indian Cricket Team and the Australian Cricket Team share an intense on-field rivalry in test cricket. The two teams first locked horns in a test match in 1947 in Brisbane.
Since then, both have witnessed ups and downs in their cricketing journey but what has made both countries cricketing powerhouses is their ability to bounce back from these challenges.
Another interesting aspect of this rivalry in test cricket has been the contrast between the home conditions of both teams: while Indian pitches assist spinners, Australian wickets are pace-friendly. This rivalry has seen many batsmen posting massive scores and guiding their team towards victory, both at home and away.
On that note let’s take a look at the top five individual scores by the Australian batsmen against India in test matches.
Top five highest individual scores by Australian batsmen against India in test cricket:
5. Ricky Ponting – 221, Adelaide, 2012
Ricky Ponting registered one of the finest knocks in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy history when he scored 221 runs in the 2012 Adelaide test. What made this innings special was the fact that it came during the twilight of his career.
Ponting’s marathon knock consisting of 21 fours propelled Australia to a daunting first innings total of 604. Ponting added 381 runs with Michael Clarke for the fourth wicket. Australia won the test by 298 runs to complete a 4-0 whitewash and Ponting was named Player of the Match.
4. Justin Langer – 223, Sydney, 2000
Former Australian opener Justin Langer brought up his third test double hundred in the third test match of India’s tour of Australia 2000. Batting on a good pitch in Sydney, Langer took on the Indian bowling attack, scoring 223 runs in 350 balls with the help of 30 fours.
Langer’s innings helped Australia reach a total of 552 in their first innings. The hosts eventually won the game by an innings and 141 runs.
3. Ricky Ponting – 242, Adelaide, 2003
Ponting produced another sensational innings against India in the first innings of the Adelaide test in 2003. Batting first Ponting toyed with the Indian bowling attack, scoring 242 runs in 350 balls at a strike rate of 69. His innings, which involved 31 fours, helped Australia post a big total of 556 runs.
However, Australia lost the Adelaide test by four wickets on the final day. Rahul Dravid’s unforgettable knock of 233 in India’s first innings and his unbeaten 72 in the chase overshadowed Ponting’s effort.
2. Ricky Ponting – 257, Melbourne, 2003
Appearing third time on this list is Australia’s batting giant Ricky Ponting. Ponting followed up his double century in Adelaide with an even better innings of 257 in the next test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Batting second, Ponting once again took charge, punishing the Indian bowlers with his brilliant stroke play. Unlike the previous test, there was no dramatic turnaround this time as Australia cruised to a nine-wicket victory.
1. Michael Clarke – 329*, 2012
Michael holds the record for the highest individual score for Australia against India in test cricket with his unbeaten knock of 329 in Sydney in the 2011/12 series.
Clarke’s marathon innings included 39 fours and a six. He added 324 runs with Michael Hussey and the duo batted India out of the game.
Australia won by an innings and 68 runs and Clarke was named Player of the Match for his record-breaking knock.
