Former English batter Andy Sandham was the first-ever player to score a triple century in test cricket.

In the 147 years of test cricket, England have always been one of the most competitive sides in the world. They are the inventors of this sport and have an exceptional history.

There have been many memorable moments for England in their test history, and among them are the few instances of their batsmen scoring a triple century.

It was an English batter who was the first to reach the 300-run mark in the test cricket. There have been six batters who have achieved this milestone in their career for England.

There have been some huge knocks played by English batters that are etched in the record books. In this article, we will talk about the top five highest individual scores for England in test cricket. 

List of top five highest individual scores by England batsmen in test cricket:

5. Harry Brook – 317 vs Pakistan, Multan, 2024

Harry Brook is the sixth English batsman to record a test triple century. He did it against Pakistan in October 2024 at Multan Cricket Ground. Brook slammed the second-fastest triple century in test cricket off 310 balls.

He finished with 317 off 322 balls, with 29 fours and three sixes, to help England post the fourth-highest test total (823/7d) of all time.

4. Andy Sandham – 325 vs West Indies, Kingston, 1930

Andy Sandham was the first-ever batsman to make a test triple ton. He did it against the West Indies in Kingston in 1930. Sandham made 325 off 640 balls, with 28 fours.

England reached 849 runs in 258.2 overs, which is the third-highest test total of all time. He scored 50 in the second innings and the game ended in a draw.

3. Graham Gooch – 333 vs India, Lord’s, 1990

Graham Gooch was the run machine of his era for England. At the time of his retirement, he was England’s highest scorer in tests, along with more than 44000 First-Class (FC) runs. He holds the record for the highest individual score by an English captain in test cricket.

He scored 333 runs, with 43 fours and three sixes, against India at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in 1990. Gooch scored 123 in the second innings as well. He scored 456 runs in that game, which is the most runs by a batsman in a test match. England won that game by 247 runs.

2. Wally Hammond – 336* vs New Zealand, Auckland, 1933

Wally Hammond holds the record for the most double centuries (7) in test cricket for England. He scored over 50,000 runs in his First-Class (FC) cricket career, and his highest score of 336 not out is the second-highest individual score for England in test cricket.

He made it against New Zealand in Auckland in March 1993. Hammond scored an unbeaten 336, with 34 fours and ten sixes, to take England to 548/7d. The match ended in a draw.

1. Leonard Hutton – 364 vs Australia, The Oval, 1938

England were the first team to touch the 900-run total in test cricket, courtesy of a marathon innings by Leonard Hutton against Australia at the Oval in 1938. In the first innings of the game, he slammed 364 off 847 balls with 35 overs.

England batted for 335.2 overs and declared at 903/7. Australia had a poor batting display and were all out for 201 and 123 to lose the game by an innings and 579 runs. This is the biggest test win by an innings margin.
