Sachin Tendulkar has the most runs among Indians against Australia in test cricket.

India and Australia first contested in a test match in 1947. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) began in 1996 with a one-off test in Delhi.

Australia lead the head-to-head record in test cricket between these two teams, with 45 wins and 32 losses. But India hold the edge in the BGT matches with 24 wins and 20 losses.

Test cricket between India and Australia has always featured some of the greatest batsmen of all time, with the willow wielders from both sides making huge records. The Indian batsmen have been heavily responsible for their wins over Australia.

Today, we take a look at the top five highest scores by Indian batsmen in test cricket against Australia.

5. Sachin Tendulkar- 214, Bengaluru, 2010

Sachin Tendulkar played an epic knock of 214 runs at the age of 37 when Australia played India in the second test of the 2010 series in Bengaluru. India had lost two wickets early but then Tendulkar added 318 runs for the third wicket with Murali Vijay (139).

Tendulkar hit two sixes to reach his century. There was further support by Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni, which allowed Tendulkar to dominate the Australian bowling to make 214 in 363 balls with 22 fours and two sixes.

India won the match by seven wickets.

4. MS Dhoni- 224, Chennai, 2013

MS Dhoni holds the record for the highest test score by an Indian wicketkeeper when he scored 224 runs against Australia in Chennai in 2013.

Australia had done well to score 380 in their first innings with Michael Clarke scoring a ton. India replied well with Virat Kohli scoring 107, but the most damage was done by MS Dhoni, who smashed 224 with 24 fours and six sixes in 265 balls.

His knock took India to 572 runs and in the end, it proved decisive as India won the match by 8 wickets. Dhoni became the first Indian keeper to score a double-ton in tests.

3. Rahul Dravid- 233, Adelaide, 2003

Rahul Dravid played a crucial role in India’s win in the Adelaide test on the 2003/04 tour. Australia had posted 556 runs thanks to 242 by Ricky Ponting. In reply, India were reduced to 85/4 and then VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid got together.

To get India back in the game, the two forged a mammoth 303-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Rahul Dravid plundered 223 runs, while Laxman added 148. Dravid hit 22 fours and one six in his knock, which helped India post 523 runs.

Australia replied with 196 amid Ajit Agarkar’s 6/41 and set India 230 runs to win. Dravid again came to the rescue after Virender Sehwag gave a good start. Dravid shepherded the chase with 72* leading India to a victory by four wickets.

2. Sachin Tendulkar 241*, Sydney, 2004

Sachin Tendulkar played an amazing knock of 241* in the Sydney Cricket Ground on the 2003-04 tou as India posted 705/7d. India had won the toss and chosen to bat first.

Tendulkar came into bat at 128/2 with the mindset of not playing a cover drive as he had been getting out while edging in the previous tests. The legend decided to ditch the cover drive entirely in his innings.

He made 241*, his highest test score against Australia, with 33 fours, and added 353 runs for the fifth wicket with VVS Laxman, who made 178 runs.

Australia replied with 474 as Justin Langer and Simon Katich scored centuries. In the second innings, India declared on 211/2 with Dravid on 91* and Sachin on 60* to set Australia 443 runs to win. However, the match ended in a draw as Australia made 357/6.

1. VVS Laxman- 281, Kolkata, 2001

VVS Laxman’s 281 at Eden Gardens in 2001 is the highest score by an Indian batsman against Australia in test cricket. It is considered one of the greatest knocks in the history of test cricket.

Thanks to Steve Waugh’s 110 and Matthew Hayden’s 97, Australia made 445 runs after electing to bat first. In reply, India were bowled out for 171 runs and asked to bat again by Waugh as Australia enforced the follow-on.

Sourav Ganguly decided to send VVS Laxman, who had made 59 in the first innings, up the order to bat at No.3 and history was made. Laxman made 281, adding more than 300 runs with Rahul Dravid (180). The duo batted the entire fourth day without giving Australia a single wicket.

India posted 657/7d and set a target of 384 runs. Harbhajan Singh took 6/73, including a hat-trick, the first by an Indian in tests, to bowl Australia out for 212 and India won the match by 171 runs.
