Top 5 highest scores by Shubman Gill in test cricket

Shubman Gill made his test debut in December 2020 in Australia.
One of the most talented young batsmen Indian cricket has seen in the past decade is Shubman Gill. Touted for big things right from age-group cricket, Gill was India’s leading run-scorer and the Man of the Tournament in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup triumph.
He went on an expected rise – contract in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and hefty runs in domestic cricket saw him make his ODI debut in 2019 and test debut in 2020.
Gill made his test debut on a tough assignment in Australia but returned with one of the most famous innings in Indian test cricket history as he scored 91 in the victory at the Gabba.
However, he suffered a dip in form and remained inconsistent in test cricket, which saw him get dropped from the side as well. He returned to form during the 2024 test series against England at home by being the second-highest run-scorer in the series and cemented his place in the test side before becoming captain in 2025.
In this article, let’s look at Gill’s top five scores in test cricket.
Top 5 highest scores by Shubman Gill in test cricket:
5. 128 vs Australia, Ahmedabad, 2023

Shubman Gill’s fifth-highest score in test cricket came in the Ahmedabad test against Australia in 2023. Australia scored 480 in their first innings, to which India replied with a huge total of 571, which they made on the back of 128 from Gill and 186 from Virat Kohli. Gill whacked 12 fours and a six.
This was a very flat, and lifeless pitch in Ahmedabad with nothing in it for the bowlers. The game petered out to a dull draw.
4. 129* vs West Indies, Delhi, 2025
2025 saw a big turnaround in Shubman Gill’s career. He was first appointed as India’s test captain and began his stint with a bang in the England tour, where he amassed over 700 runs. Following that, he was named India’s ODI captain as well.
In the home series against the West Indies, Gill scored a fifty in the first test in Ahmedabad, but returned with a better performance in the second test in Delhi, where he slammed 129 off 196 deliveries. His innings was laced with 16 fours and two sixes. This is currently his fourth-highest score in the longest format of the game.
3. 147 vs England, Leeds, 2025

Gill was appointed as India’s test captain in 2025 following retirement of Rohit Sharma and he began his India test captaincy stint with a bang registering his then highest score in test cricket – 147 – against England in the first test of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at Headingley, Leeds.
After being asked to bat first in the game, India piled up 471/10 in the first innings of the test, courtesy sensational tons from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gill and Rishabh Pant. Gill also became fifth Indian batter to hit a hundred on test captaincy debut during the game. However, later India lost the game as England chased a massive target of 371 runs in the fourth innings.
2. 161 vs England, Birmingham, 2025
After slamming 269 in the first innings, Gill returned with 161 more in second innings of the Edgbaston test against England in 2025, which is his second-highest score in the longest format of the game yet.
With his 161 in the second innings, Gill also registered the record for scoring most runs in a test match by an Indian batter – 430 runs, which is also the most by any captain in a test match.
1. 269 vs England, Birmingham, 2025

Shubman Gill carried from where he left off in the first test against England and then smashed another ton in the second test of India’s tour of England in 2025. Moreover, he went on to covert this one into a double. In the second test of the series at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Gill produced another masterclass as he registered his maiden double hundred in test cricket.
Gill finished his innings at 269 and helped India post a huge total of 587 in the first innings.
